When my husband and I received the news that we were expecting a baby, one of the first things I thought about was designing and decorating the nursery. Here is how my husband and I decided on a sunshine theme nursery.

I can’t tell you how excited I was to begin the design process, but I was very overwhelmed with where to actually begin. We were living in our current home for a little over a year when we found out we were pregnant. We had two additional empty bedrooms. The thought of having the opportunity to decorate one as a nursery was so exciting, but nerve wracking at the same time. I thought I’d share my experience in how I decided on a theme for our daughter’s room to help simplify the process for you.

Find One Item You Love

In the beginning, the room was stark and had bright white walls. I knew I wanted to add some cheerful colors and decorations without having to paint the entire room. Through many, many nights spent looking up ideas on Pinterest and Instagram, I stumbled across one item that I knew I had to have for the room. This item being an adorable sunshine carpet from the brand Nestig. This one item totally inspired the entire nursery with a sunshine theme.

I have to say, I was very overwhelmed with the amount of ideas there are for baby’s nurseries. Being able to say “yes” and commit to the carpet really help me fill in the gaps for the rest of the room and guide me in the right direction.

Pull Inspiration From That One Item

Once I had decided on the sunshine theme for the room I purchased the carpet, I then went and searched for mural ideas to help brighten up the room. After a few searches on the internet I came across a website selling easy peel off wall decals, Urban Walls.

I found the most perfect sunshine wall decals that matched the carpet and helped add a whimsical and cheerful feel to the room. My husband and I had such a fun time laying the pattern out and creating the design. We were having so much fun that I even made a Tik Tok during the process.

Add Color

Once we found out we were having a baby girl, I started to add in some shades of pink throughout the nursery. I wanted to include this fun pink hot-air balloon mobile for her crib which I found on Etsy.

Add Personal Touches

Finishing the nursery was the best part. I recommend adding personal touches to the room to make it feel special and one-of-a-kind. Once we settled on our daughter’s name we went ahead and purchased a wooden sign with her name on it, as well as wooden letter blocks spelling her name out. Adding these personal touches really made this nursery feel like hers.

I hope this post helps take away any anxiety you may feel while beginning the nursery design process. Remember it is up to you to decide what vibe you want to have in the nursery. Don’t be afraid to consider new ideas and to use the internet and social media as tools to help you get inspired. Feel free to leave a comment below if you found these steps helpful.
